Jodhpur Fort
There is one major attraction to Jodhpur which draws the tourists and it dominates the skyline of the city, the Meherangarh Fort of Jodhpur in Rajasthan state. The Majestic Meherangarh fort perches on top of a large rock out crop which in places blends right into the walls of the castle to appear as if both the rock out crop and the Meherangarh fort are one.
The image was taken looking south to the Meherangarh fort, following the main route into the castle (from the east). The south side of the fort which over looks the bulk of Jodhpur, the blue painted city, is positioned on a sheer cliff face.
The Fort has walls which are 36 meters high but combined with the rock face appear imperturbable and it is true that the fort has never been capture by a full frontal assault.
The Fort of Jodhpur was originally conceived in 1459 by Rao Jodha but he fort which is seen today was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Jaswant Singh who ruled Jodhpur between 1638-1678.
There are three main areas of the Meherangarh Fort; the south heavily fortified entrance with its twisting narrow paths with incredibly steep walls, the main palace which is fully open to tourists and the high viewing ramparts originally designed as a defensive position and look out position. The Meherangarh Fort is possible the best preserved fort within Rajasthan and makes the city of Jodhpur a popular stop when heading east from Jaipur.
