The Jaswant Thada, Jodhpur
Jaswant Thada is a beautiful marble memorial dedicated to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II that is located on the main road to Meherangarh Fort from Jodhpur. The Jaswant Thada balances out Meherangarh fort's solid imposing exterior by having some of the most delicate and ornate marble carving found in Rajasthan. Many of Jodhpur's visitors simply walk past the Jaswant Thada memorial after exploring Meherangarh fort either too tired or not realizing the exquisiteness hidden within.
The Jaswant Thada was constructed in 1899 by Sardar Singh to honor his father Jaswant Singh II who died in 1895. The site has subsequently become the burial ground and memorial for Jodhpur's maharajas each of whom has a white marble tomb in the central building. One of the strange memorials contained within the complex is dedicated to a peacock that flew into the funeral pyre while the maharaja's body was cremated. Over the windows there is intricate marble lattice screens that are called jalis.
The complex is open between 09:00 to 17:00 and the entrance fee is Rs30 (plus Rs25 for a camera). The Jaswant Thada's grounds are carefully maintained with multi-tiered levels and carved gazebos. The gardens provide a great opportunity to photograph Meherangarh Fort or to rest under the shade of a tree. Also contained within the gardens is a small lake that is home to waterfowl and numerous birds. The lake is a refreshing sight after spending the day in hot and arid conditions.
