Bridge Over The River Kwai
The Bridge over the River Kwai is in the city of Kanchanaburi to the west of Thailand. The original bridge that spans the river Kwai, which was made famous by the classic war movie, no longer stands. The original River Kwai brifge was destroyed by the fighting of the the second world. These images are of the replacement bridge which was constructed in the 1960s. The bridge today still uses the bases supports that were built by the force labour camps that contained allied prisoners of war.
The Bridge River Kwai is always popular with tourists but the location still retains a dignified atmosphere and is a moving memorial to the many soldiers who died during the original construction. The Bridge over the River Kwai was part of the 415km Burma Railway, also referred to as the Death Railway that connected Bangkok (Thailand) to Rangoon (Burma). The bridge was constructed by Japan to bring supplies and support to it's forces during the campaign in Burma.
